1. An interested producer requests information on joining the scheme from SPCA National Office. See Contact Us.
2. A Starter Pack is sent out, including introductory notes, application forms, relevant SPCA welfare standards and general information about the scheme.
3. The producer completes the necessary documents and sends them, with the initial audit fee, to the SPCA Coordinator. The SPCA Coordinator arranges for an audit of the producer’s farm.
Note: Payment of the initial audit fee does not imply accreditation status.
4. The initial audit will take from three hours to a full day, depending on the size of the flock. Requirements include meeting SPCA standards, animal care checklist, veterinary health care plan, biosecurity plan and emergency procedures. There is an opportunity for both producer and auditor to discuss any concerns.
5. The auditor’s report is prepared and sent to the SPCA Coordinator for approval of accreditation. The producer will be notified in writing of any non-compliance with SPCA standards.
6. The producer will have three months in which to rectify any non-compliance with SPCA standards as highlighted in the auditor’s report.
7. Once all is in order, accreditation will be granted.
8. Annual inspections will be carried out by auditors appointed by the SPCA. Spot checks may also be carried out.
