One of the Family is an education initiative launched by the SPCA in 2007 to take empathy education to schools around New Zealand. Norm Hewitt and SPCA education officers will be meeting with intermediate age children to encourage them to treat animals as one of the family.
Helping One helps the Other Research shows strong links between animal cruelty and interpersonal violence. Teaching children empathy through compassion for animals can encourage the same behaviour towards humans. Our inschool program will teach children positive behaviours. The SPCA recieves no Government funding and needs your support. To learn more about this campaign or to donate visit the One of the Family website at www.oneofthefamily.co.nz
In 2009 Norm and the team
are starting on the second round of school visits, after already
meeting over 25,000 intermediate aged children during the first two
years. 'One of the Family' is ongoing and schools throughout New
Zealand will be contacted to offer the opportunity for classes to
participate in the program.
