Environmental Enrichment Workshop
RNZSPCA Approved egg producers recently held a one-day workshop with international poultry expert Neville Gregory.
The theme of the workshop was environmental enrichment and its practical application to barn and free-range production systems. A number of creative ideas were discussed, some of which will be trialled in coming months by our producers.
The Society remains committed to providing a high standard of welfare for hens under the accreditation schemes, and environmental enrichment is an integral part of this.

Eggs Available Nationwide
RNZSPCA Approved eggs are now available in all good supermarkets nationwide. Until recently, the eggs were unavailable on the West Coast of the South Island and in Otago and Southland. However, these regions have now gained coverage, and RNZSPCA Approved free-range and/or barn eggs are now available in all main centres in New Zealand.
In addition, five North Island supermarkets now stock RNZSPCA Approved eggs to the exclusion of all battery eggs. Featherston Community Supermarket recently joined the New World supermarkets in Dannevirke, Pahiatua, Kuripuni and Carterton, which have not stocked battery eggs since October 1998. Congratulations to these supermarkets for supporting animal welfare-friendly production systems.

Egg Advertisement Popular
The SPCA recently began television advertising to increase awareness of RNZSPCA Approved barn and free-range eggs as sold through supermarkets. Created by Red Rocks Advertising, and featuring an egg with a sad and then a happy face and a cute voice-over by a young child, the advertisement has captured the attention of viewers as evidenced by increased sales of RNZSPCA Approved eggs. The advertisement will appear on screens periodically over the next 12 months.
Coupled with this, our new brochure explaining the schemes is currently being distributed. Look out for it in supermarkets where RNZSPCA Approved barn and free-range eggs are sold.
